Learning to love to read again may be key to reversing the decline in national literacy scores.

Literacy scholars Phil Capin and Pamela Mason were joined by Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Academic Dean, Martin West, in a podcast to discuss one of today's most pressing grand challenges: the troubling decline of U.S. literacy rates.

The episode highlights that declining literacy rates are complex, involving multiple factors including: instructional practice, social and economic factors, student motivation, and changing technology habits. Addressing the crisis will require systemic, research-aligned action—and for both educators and families to actively model and foster a love of reading.

READS Lab enjoyed this thought-proving conversation and has confidence that these three scholars from different backgrounds and perspectives will be crucial leaders in creating a new multifaceted and audacious solution to solving this grand challenge.
